A Heavy Heart

As a relatively new blog, I struggle sometimes with its identity: only recipes? Restaurants, too? Will I bore people with cookbook reviews? And I really struggle with how to incorporate personal writing. I gravitate towards personal writing naturally, but sometimes as a food blog, it seems out of place.

However something very sad has happened this week, and it’s making it impossible to write about the new lunch windows I’ve tried recently. I’m not quite ready to talk about it yet.

Besides losing my grandma to cancer years ago, I’ve never lost anyone close to me. Anyone my age. One of my best friends. So today, I won’t leave you with a recipe or a restaurant recommendation. Instead, I leave you with a few photos that make me smile, and urge you to hug those you love today extra, extra close. I’ll be back soon.

-- sometimes sharing what is simply on the surface of your heart in one moment is all that is needed. i think it can only improve your writing- your blog. to leave your readers with something so simple as 4 photos that make you smile makes your blog that much more real. there IS a real person behind those resturant reviews and cookbook ratings- there is someone just like me who sometimes has hard days she can't talk about, someone who needs to just check out sometimes. thank you for sharing with me, and us, and i hope your heart will be full of joy when thinking about good times passed, and memories that will never be forgotten. thank you.

Oh dear. Hang in there Megan, we all have tough days and just have to get through them with friends and nice photos. Keep your head up! These photos are pretty, one of them reminds me of upstate NY in fall.

Thank you all for your sweet comments. It really means a lot to me. Things are slowly falling back into place again. It's sunny today, there's homemade bread downstairs, and I'm going through some old photos of my dear friend. Thank you again for your thoughts.

And Kelsey: you have a good eye...the canoe photo is at my mom's cabin in Upstate New York (Lake George). I'm impressed!

Chels, looking forward to reconnecting with you, too. And Carra, I do remember you...I know--we all loved Jean so, so much. Sending you good thoughts. Her writing is quite something on that blog, huh?

I am so sorry Megan, my heart goes out to you...

Try not worry to much about what you want the blog to "be," and write what you feel. I am so amazed by the amount of support I've received through my blog, and the connections I've made through it - and I love your blog just the way it is :)

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss...

    i'm with you...
on many levels. including the writing, blog identity questions, and the drive to tell the ones I love that I love them DAILY.

Thai Carrot, Coconut and Cauliflower Soup

People describe raising young kids as a particular season in life. I hadn’t heard this until we had a baby, but it brought me a lot of comfort when I’d start to let my mind wander, late at night between feedings, to fears that we’d never travel internationally again or…

Cheesy Quinoa Cauliflower Bake

I just finished washing out Oliver’s lunchbox and laying it out to dry for the weekend. My favorite time of day is (finally) here: the quiet of the evening when I can actually talk to Sam about our day or sit and reflect on my own thoughts after the inevitable…

Stuffed Shells with Fennel and Radicchio

I’d heard from many friends that buying a house wasn’t for the faint of heart. But I always shrugged it off, figuring I probably kept better files or was more organized and, really, how hard could it be? Well, I’ve started (and stopped) writing this post…

If your house is anything like ours, last week wasn’t our most inspired in terms of cooking. We’re all suffering from the post-election blues — the sole upside being Oliver’s decision to sleep-in until 7 am for the first time in many, many months; I think he’s trying…

Spiced Steel Cut Oats Porridge with Cranberry-Ginger Sauce

Porridge is not the sexiest of breakfasts, it’s true. It doesn’t have a stylish name like strata or shakshuka, and it doesn’t have perfectly domed tops like your favorite fruity muffin. It doesn’t crumble into delightful bits like a good scone nor does it fall into buttery…
